Proponents cite the need for increased yields and decreased production costs to counter the loss of planted acreage and compete with corn and soybeans.  Opponents are concerned about the potential impact on health and the need for labeling of products so consumers can make informed choices.  Grain companies and millers may face increased costs for segregating GMO and non-GMO wheat which could impact the price to customers.
